Domestic wastewater originates from housing estates, hotels, office buildings and municipal sewer networks. It carries a high organic load but no industrial contaminants, and that character makes biological processes the natural choice for domestic wastewater treatment: micro-organisms consume the organic matter as food and, given enough oxygen, bring the water to a dischargeable quality. Three approaches dominate in practice. Extended aeration activated sludge is common in medium-sized plants because it produces little sludge and is simple to operate. MBR (membrane bioreactor) replaces the clarifier with membranes, works in a far smaller footprint and delivers effluent good enough for reuse. SBR systems operate on a time basis in a single reactor, giving flexibility where flow varies through the day. The right choice is not only a matter of technology: population equivalent, daily flow swing, available area and the applicable discharge limit are weighed together. Aeration is the most expensive part of that equation. The blowers that meet oxygen demand in the biological basin account for more than half of a typical plant's electricity consumption. Diffuser selection and grid layout are therefore an operating cost that will be felt far longer than the capital cost of the plant. A correctly designed fine bubble aeration grid delivers the same treatment performance on markedly less energy. Problems We Solve
- Flow and load fluctuation
- Seasonal hotel occupancy or changing site population makes the inlet load swing widely. The system must absorb that swing without upsetting sludge age.
- Odour and noise control
- For plants close to residential areas, enclosure, an odour abatement unit and blower acoustic isolation must be part of the design.
- Discharge compliance
- Keeping COD, BOD, TSS, total nitrogen and phosphorus within regulatory limits, and sizing the nitrification-denitrification stage correctly for nitrogen removal.
- Energy cost
- Aeration is more than half of total consumption. Diffuser selection and dissolved oxygen control directly set the annual operating bill.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much space does a domestic treatment plant need?
It depends on the technology and population equivalent. Because MBR systems need no clarifier they require a noticeably smaller footprint than conventional activated sludge — decisive on hotel and residential projects where land is tight.
Can the treated water be reused?
With MBR or an added tertiary stage, the effluent can be recovered for irrigation, toilet flushing and general washdown. Reuse cuts mains water intake and shortens the payback period of the investment.
Does operation require a full-time operator?
Daily intervention is minimal on automated systems. With automatic control driven by online dissolved oxygen and flow measurement plus remote monitoring, site visits can be limited to periodic maintenance.
